“Really Like U” is a frank, adult song about desire: Stalk Ashley spells out, without apology, what she wants from someone she is attracted to, and makes it clear she does not care who judges her for saying it. Skillibeng joins to answer her with the same boldness from his side. Released on 1 March 2024, it is explicit from start to finish, and the confidence is the point.
Below is what the song is about as the artists and music press have described it, told in our own words. We do not reprint lyrics here; you can read the full lyrics on Genius and watch the official video on YouTube.
What Stalk Ashley said the song means
Stalk Ashley kept her own explanation short. Speaking to the Jamaica Observer a week after release, she said the song lists “the things I’d like to do unapologetically with no concern for what people say”. She gave Kaboom Magazine a nearly identical description on release day, calling the message straightforward.
Two ideas sit inside that one sentence, and both drive the record:
- Desire, stated openly. The verses are a woman describing physical attraction in plain, graphic terms, with no coy metaphors to hide behind.
- Freedom from judgement. She repeatedly waves off the idea that anyone else gets a vote on how she lives or who she chooses. That defiance matters as much as the heat.
The themes, verse by verse
A woman setting the terms
The song opens and closes with Stalk Ashley in control. Rather than waiting to be pursued, she tells the other person exactly what she wants and where she is willing to meet them. That flips a familiar dancehall setup in which men tend to do the boasting and women are the subject of it.
Skillibeng answers the challenge
Skillibeng arrives in the second half and matches her energy rather than softening it. His lines are just as explicit and full of the swagger he is known for. Kaboom Magazine described the pair trading verses in their own rap-leaning styles, and that back-and-forth turns the song into a conversation between two people who want the same thing.
The softest moment is the title
For all its bluntness, the title phrase is the most tender line in the song. Set among all the swagger, “really like you” hints at genuine interest underneath the heat, a small shift that keeps the song from being pure boasting.
How the sound fits the message
The production mirrors the song’s attitude. In a Jamaica Gleaner interview in April 2024, Stalk Ashley described it as dancehall-leaning lyrics laid over a trap and R&B beat, part of a more experimental direction for her next project. Billboard heard the skittering snares of New York drill running over a stripped-back dancehall rhythm, and called it a showcase of both artists’ versatility.
That combination is important to the meaning. The sparse, sultry beat leaves space for the vocals, so every line lands clearly, and the drill drums give the flirtation an edge of urgency.
How it fits the “Bratt” persona
“Really Like U” became track eight on her debut album Stalky the Bratt, released on 30 August 2024. When the album arrived, Stalk Ashley told the Observer that being a Bratt means staying real and true to yourself all the time. This song is perhaps the clearest example of that idea: she says exactly what she means and does not dress it up.
The song itself grew out of a direct message. Stalk Ashley told the Observer she had wanted to work with Skillibeng for some time, and the track came together through an exchange of Instagram messages, a story we cover in how an Instagram DM became “Really Like U”. Is “Really Like U” explicit?
Yes. Apple Music marks the track as explicit, and the lyrics are sexually graphic throughout. It is not a radio-clean love song, so listeners who want something gentler may prefer a softer duet such as her Sean Paul collaboration “Stay With Me”.
