Seven years ago next month, an unknown singer from the Jamaican countryside entered a viral challenge with a freestyle built on her own unreleased lyrics. Jada Kingdom reposted it. A hundred thousand views and a thousand comments later, Stalk Ashley’s career had begun.
The mechanics of the moment are a time capsule of 2018 internet Jamaica: Jada’s “Banana” instrumental, dropped on SoundCloud by her manager, sparked a challenge started organically by a fan — “People are posting verses every minute and bloggers are reposting,” Jada told the Weekend Star. Stalk Ashley’s entry, repurposing lines from “Time Waster”, was the one that stuck. “I didn’t exactly expect the video to go viral,” she admitted to the Star, “but I’m glad it did.”
The reward came fast: “Wasteman”, the duet released that October via Zojak, premiered through Pop Style Music — the management camp both artists then shared. Jada had said her favourite part of the challenge was “being able to help young talent get a platform.” No one used the platform better.
