“Narcissistic” works like a short radio drama with two characters rather than one narrator. Apple Music lists both artists as songwriters, and each voices the side of the argument they perform. The plot moves through three stages:
- His regret. The male character looks back on what he did, and his hook is built around remorse.
- Her discovery. Stalk Ashley’s character learns that his affair has left another woman expecting a baby. Her verses carry the shock and anger of finding out.
- The standoff. He is sorry but still tries to hold on, and she will not be talked round. The song ends with no reconciliation.
That shape matters. Many cheating songs give you only the confession or only the revenge. This one puts both reactions to the same betrayal side by side in about three minutes.
Who is the narcissist in “Narcissistic”?
Oddly, the word never appears in the lyrics, which Vibe pointed out when it interviewed Stalk Ashley in September 2024. She left no doubt about which character the title means. “The narcissist in the song is definitely Valiant,” she told Vibe, then laughed and added that he had better agree. She was talking about the role he plays in the song, the partner who caused the damage.
One way to hear the title is as her character’s verdict. He regrets what he did, but his regret is mostly about what he lost. Calling him narcissistic sums up how she sees a man whose apology still centres on himself.
A dancehall answer to “Confessions”
Vibe compared the song to a dancehall take on Usher’s “Confessions”, and the comparison fits. In “Confessions Part II” (2004), Usher’s narrator admits that a woman he cheated with is pregnant. That song reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. The big difference is who gets to speak. Usher’s song is a monologue, and the woman he hurt is only described. In “Narcissistic”, she gets her own verses, and her decision closes the story.
Vibe described that balance as emotional trauma heard from both sides of the gender divide. It is the main reason the song feels like more than a novelty duet.
Why listeners saw themselves in it
The story struck a nerve. Vibe reported that the song topped the Jamaican charts for weeks. Stalk Ashley also told the magazine that fans kept messaging her to say it described exactly what they were going through, and asked how she could have known.
The subject suits her. When the Gleaner reviewed her Reggae Sumfest Blitz set in 2025, it described her catalogue as songs about heartbreak, desire and self-worth. “Narcissistic” covers all three.
