“Incognito” with Stalk Ashley: why it stood out
Of all the songs above, “Incognito” has one of the best backstories. Jamaican Dancehall&B singer Stalk Ashley released it on October 23, 2020 through Atlantic Records UK, and DancehallMag reported that the video climbed to No. 1 on YouTube’s trending list in Jamaica shortly after release.
The pairing began as a fan story. Ashley had been recording covers of Alkaline songs a few years before they worked together, and in comments reported by DancehallMag she said she had still never met him in person when the song was made. When The FADER premiered the mafia-styled video on December 23, 2020, she described him plainly: “Alkaline is my absolute favourite artist” (The FADER).
Timing made it stand out as well. It arrived months before Top Prize, his completely guest-free album, and it was the last new collaboration we could verify from him until “Wul Mine” in 2024. For an emerging singer two years removed from a viral freestyle, landing a verse from one of dancehall’s most selective stars was a statement.
